Booyah!

installing fonts.pngFirst, you’ll want to decide which font to download first… because this can get super addicting and you’ll have 90 million fonts on your computer in no time. Go to pinterest or your favorite free fonts website and pick one to start with.  I like to use dafont.com. They’re free fonts and they’re awesome. No brainer.

How to download and install fonts on your computer

1. Go to site and find the free font you want to use first.

I’m going to choose the “traveling typewriter” free font to show you today. I love that font by the way.

2. Download font

Click download and save the font to your desktop or another folder you choose to store your fonts temporarily. My files download automatically to my “Downloads” folder so I let them chill there until I’m ready for them.

Usually, the download will include one or both common font file formats. (.otf and .ttf) Both file formats are compatible with both PC and Mac systems so it doesn’t really matter which one you save.

3.  Open Font Book

Next, open your Font Book application and open the folder where you just downloaded/saved your new free font. It will be in your Applications folder and the icon looks like this..

4. Drag to “All Fonts”

Locate your font and drag it to “All Fonts” in your Font Book application. You can go in and organize your fonts by font type in your Font Book as well but its not really necessary in my opinion.

5. Your font should appear in the “Fonts” column in Font Book.

6. Finally, go to the program you wish to use your new font in and it should be in the font drop down menu! If you already had the program open when you installed your font, you may need to restart the program for your font to appear.

  1. I am so happy this post came along my “reading list” today. I have been blogging on and off for the past year or so and would like to get more serious about it…after using free online photo editing I decided to step it up about a month ago and bought Photoshop..but I found that while there are plenty of fonts in Photoshop, I was unsure that any of them were exactly “me”. I knew a person could download fonts but I was not sure how to go about it…now I am! This is what I love about the blog world, a community of sharing!

  2. I’ve been looking forward to this second part of your post. I’ve pinned your tutorial and am following your fav fonts on Pinterest. When I get some time I am going to sit down and play with the fonts on my blog. Yay! Blessings to you, Patti

  3. This is EXACTLY what I need!!!! The last time you posted those free fonts, I was completely clueless on how to download them. I am SO going to try this and I’m guaranteed to be addicted and have a billion free fonts on my computer, lol!! Thanks for the step-by-step guide! Pinning now!

    Hugs,

  4. Omg this is what I’ve been trying to do for a long time now! Thank you soooo much!!!! You’re very helpful w/this blog step by step! Thank you!!!!

  5. Great tutorial! I LOVE fonts too! I do have one sad problem that I’ve been experiencing, all my fonts are showing up in my programs, except Silhouette Studio. I’ve upgraded and restarted everything, still no go. :/ Any ideas?

  6. Hello! I am trying to follow your tutorial for how to upload my free fonts to Font Book. I clicked and drag them to All Fonts but it won’t save or do anything but go back to my desktop. They are still zipped. Do I need to unzip them? Sorry, I’m a newbie.

    1. When you push “download” for the font you want, select “open”. This will open the zipped file and then mouse over and double click. this should open up another window. in the top section of this window you will see and “install” button. click on that and it will automatically install on your computer. If you have an older computer and it doesn’t have the install button then you need to extract the file manually. Select the file(s) you want “extract” and then find the location where you want to send the file to: C-windows–font. Hope that helps. you might need a program to “unzip” the files you want to see.

  7. Hi! Thanks so much for this! But…can you tell me what this font book is? Is it an app? If so, I have been unable to find it…..HELP!?!? LOL

    1. Font book is an application. Do you have a Mac? Use the magnifying glass at the very tippy top right corner of your screen and type in Font Book and see if you have it. Most apple computers come with it! Hope that helps!

PS I’m sharing 10 more awesome fonts on Tuesday so be sure to check back!

      xoxo – Mallory

  8. I presume that the font is only applicable to the device it is installed on and that there is no system in place to transmit a unique font with a message like Word does for Windows.
